One of Brighton's most famous theatres of the past, the Hippodrome in Middle Street, is 100 years old this year.
It was designed as a skating rink in the 1890s but in 1901 was converted into a circus theatre by the famous designer Frank Matcham.
Seorita Montero was on the opening bill as "The Celebrated Spanish Horsewoman" but Brighton already had other circuses and within a year the Hippodrome was up for sale.
It became a theatre and for 60 years or more it was one of Brighton's most popular variety theatres.
It closed its doors to live shows in 1964 and since the late Sixties has been a bingo hall.
The theatre's architecture still reveals its early circus connections.
