Plans for an anti-globalisation event in Brighton and Hove have run into trouble.

Organisers want to use The Level in Brighton for the start of a march and entertainment on September 30.

It has been designed to coincide with the start of the Labour Party conference in Brighton and 8,000 people are expected to join the protest.

However, culture director Sarah Tanburn said: "With such limited information and a wholly unrealistic timetable, we would not consider a public event of this nature taking place in any of our parks and public spaces."

There is also concern that some demonstrators on the march down to the Brighton Centre might take the opportunity to attempt to smash windows of organisations they dislike.

Culture Cabinet councillor Ian Duncan said: "If it goes wrong, the organisers could end up with having egg on their faces.

"This is not a case of political prejudice. It is a matter of public safety.

I stopped a pop event at Black Rock only two weeks ago because of this."

Ms Tanburn said organisers wanted to use The Level between 11am and 9pm.

She added: "We have had very limited direct dialogue with the proposed event organisers and what we do know gives us considerable cause for concern."

"There is no organising company, no one ready to prepare risk assessment, no one dealing with health and safety and no indication of who the production team would be.

"No arrangements have been made for finance, stewarding, toilets or the collection of litter."

She said the cost of providing all the back-up would be about £5,000 and there was little sign this would be available.

Globalise Resistance, the Green Party and the Socialist Alliance are the main organisers of the event which is expected to attract many people opposed to New Labour and Tony Blair.

Talks were due to continue between the organisers, police and city councillors at the latest meeting last night.
