Well, hooray for Jez Macdonald (Letters, September 5). This bright spark pleasures himself by congratulating the new parking regime and making comments on reports about the suffering of motorists, who are the recipients of yet another low blow inflicted upon them by Brighton and Hove City Council and its latest draconian parking scheme.

No doubt Jez - a cyclist, he proudly tells us - spends much of his leisure time "free"-wheeling about on the very roads motorists pay through the nose to upkeep in the hope he witnesses traffic wardens slapping £30 penalty tickets on windscreens.

He certainly has his finger on the pulse when it comes to road accidents. Ten deaths and 110 serious injuries each day. But Jez neglects to tell us how many of these are caused by the reckless bike riders who flagrantly disregard the rules of the road he purports motorists should vigorously uphold.

How many times have we seen motorists taking evasive action because some gung-ho cyclist bore down on them going the wrong way down a one-way street? Traffic lights seem to be nothing more than a mild irritant that should be ignored. As for lights after dark, for most cyclists they are out of the question. And do you recall the last time you had to step aside on the pavement when you were carrying shopping on seeing a bike weaving its way towards you?

The sooner cyclists such as Jez start paying road tax and accident insurance the better.
