There were calls today for two park soccer players who launched a vicious attack on a rival player to be banned for life.

AMC Athletic, who play in the Worthing League, have sent a full report on the assault, and photographs of the injuries sustained by their left-back, to the Sussex FA.

The player was attacked by two Maple Leaf Rangers players just seconds after the final whistle in a game AMC won 3-0.

Witnesses, some of whom have been involved in parks soccer for decades, said it was the most disgusting and sickening act they had ever witnesssed.

The AMC player was left lying on the pitch with blood pouring from facial cuts. He suffered eye and dental damage and was forced to take time off work this week.

His wife was distraught when he got home after spending Saturday afternoon at Worthing Hospital's casualty department.

One Maple Leaf player was so horrified by the attack he vowed never play for the club again.

Ironically, both teams drink in the same pub after the game and many of the players are good friends.

Referee Phil Woolgar, who after the game said he had never seen anything like it, has sent a report to the Sussex FA.

The victim is reluctant to press criminal charges, but AMC are determined to take the matter to Lancaster Gate, home of the FA, if necessary.

The club, which also has a team in Division Two, considered disbanding after Saturday's scenes, but have decided to carry on, although they will never again field a team against a side containing the two players concerned.
