Tony Blair was visibly shocked as he cancelled his speech at the TUC conference in Brighton and annoucned his decision to return immediately returned to London.

Speaking at the Brighton Centre, he condemned mass terrorism as the new evil in our world today saying its perpertrators were "immune to the sanctity of human life".

He said: "I am afraid we can only imagine the terror and the carnage there and the many many innocent people that have lost their lives.

"I know you would want to join with me in offering our deepest sympathies to President Bush and the American people and expressing our absolute shock and outrage."
