More than 4,000 people in Sussex have registered to receive flood warnings.
The Environment Agency has introduced a new scheme where people whose homes or businesses are at risk of flooding can be notified directly by agency staff.
The free service aims to give people who may be victim of a flood extra warning time to protect their home or workplace.
The agency contacted 40,000 homes and businesses in Sussex and more than one in ten people have signed up for the service.
Russell Turner, regional flood warning officer, said people affected by the floods last autumn knew the misery such a disaster caused and how difficult it could be to cope.
He said: "Receiving a flood warning direct to your home or business could make all the difference."
Anyone wishing to register should call 0845 9881188.
