Commuters faced long delays after a railway worker was struck by two trains and killed.
The contractor, working for engineering firm Amex, was part of a maintenance team working in Purley, Surrey, when the accident happened just after midday.
Inspector Gary Young, of British Transport Police, said: "Shortly before midday a railway contractor was struck by two trains while acting as a lookout at Purley Oaks railway station.
"He received multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious but a full investigation is being conducted."
A spokesman for Connex South Central said local services and the Gatwick Express faced delays of up to 100 minutes.
A spokesman for Amex said the company was devastated at the news and their sympathy went to the dead man's family The Railway Inspectorate is investigating the accident.
