A man who was found lying in the street with a fractured skull is fighting for life today.

Police do not yet know whether the man was attacked or fell and hit his head but they are treating the case as suspicious and an inquiry has been launched.

Detective Inspector Bill Warner, heading the inquiry, said: "Until we have all the facts we are keeping an open mind."

The 22-year-old local man, dressed in casual clothes, was found slumped on his side near Brighton Town Hall in Little East Street, opposite Choy's Restaurant.

A passer-by spotted him at 2.37am today and he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit where his condition was said to be critical.

Police believe they know the man's identity but are not releasing details until relatives have been told.
