I just found the ultimate gadget! The Projection Barometer from Oregon Scientific has so much nerd appeal it hurts.

Visually cooler than a cool thing, this slick piece of technology frippery really can multi-task.

Apart from its function as a highly-accurate digital alarm clock, it offers indoor and outdoor temper-ature readings and an animated on-screen weather forecast that beats hanging seaweed from your shed.

The futuristic-looking barometer's picture predictions have the uncanny knack of being right, even when weather forecasters on the television say otherwise.

The bit I really like is the built-in light projector that, when the alarm goes off, displays the time and the outside temperature on a convenient surface, such as your bedroom ceiling or wall.

Okay, it is not rocket science but it is pretty slick to look at and might even stop you wanting to thump your alarm clock.

The barometer's forecasts are displayed as a graphic image, suggesting rain clouds or sunshine or something in between.

A well-constructed external temperature sensor sends the outside temperature by radio to the base unit.

The manufacturers say the unit's predictions should be accurate for the next 12 to 24 hours and its weather forecast is about 70 per cent to 75 per cent accurate.

The instructions book is essential reading if you want to get the best from the unit and it does not take many minutes to absorb all you need to know.

The price is extremely reasonable given the high level of sophistication and I can vouch for the vile efficiency of the alarm clock.
