Now our councillors have awarded themselves a rise, I would urge them to go to Eastbourne to see how a town should look.
The people did not appear so worried. I expect it was because they knew there were toilets, so they didn't have to keep crossing their legs while looking into shops to find one, as we do in Brighton and Hove. The flowers were beautiful along the seafront and there were seats. They were watering all the hanging baskets, which were lovely.
We had a very nice lunch and enjoyed our day. We arrived back in Brighton and buses were doing a "Cook's tour" because North Street was blocked off. When we changed buses in London Road, it was a tip. I feel really sorry for our street cleaners.
I came to Brighton in 1935. There were all sorts of entertainments for visitors, our rates were £1 a week and the town was clean. Happy memories.
