Dickie Day has stepped down as manager of double winning Sidley United.

Day has handed over control to his assistant Peter Heritage and reserve team player Glen Sully.

Sidley did the double last season when they won the County League division one title for the first time in their history and also lifted the John O'Hara League Cup.

Day said: "A few people knew I was thinking about giving up the job before the start of this season but I thought I would give it one more year.

"I could never have expected such success and it has been like a fairytale."

Work commitments have played a major part in the 49-year-old's decision.

But he added: "I always said I would not do the job for too long.

"It's also true that you are only as good as your last game in football management.

"If we got off to a bad start next season the knives would have come out."

Day, whose son Adam plays for the team, discussed his plans to resign at a meeting on Tuesday.

He said: "I wanted to make sure Glen was up for taking over with Pete and it is important for the players and the club that we have kept it in house.

"I think the pair will do a very good job and I would love it if they won the title again. Glen is a former manager of Bexhill Town and has managerial experience. He knows what he is doing, as does Peter Heritage."
