Sea mist and cloud combined to put a dampener on the bank holiday weekend.

Predictions for a hot and sunny three days failed to materialise as a blanket of mist hit the coast, although it was brighter and warmer inland.

Brighton and Hove seafront officer Nick Banks said visitor numbers were low compared with a couple of weekends ago, when sunny weather led to packed beaches.

He said: "Some restaurants and pubs have been doing a bit of trade but things are slow."

At Worthing, the number of people visiting the town and seafront was well down on last year.

Beach officer Tim Smalley said: "There have been a few people out and about but nothing like the crowds we were hoping for."
