Haywards Heath can target a top five finish when they make their London One debut next season.

That is the verdict of Dave Wattam, who has skippered them to a ground-breaking Two South and Sussex Trophy double.

Heath added county honours to the league title by beating a dogged Worthing side 25-12 last Saturday.

They complete their league campaign at home to Gravesend today but already have an eye on next season.

Wattam said: "I believe we will cope well in London One.

"Relegation will not be an issue. We need a bit more strength in depth but we can stay up and probably come in the top five."

Wattam, Heath's player of the year, hopes compet-ition for places will be tougher than ever.

He added: "We do not have a policy of nicking other clubs' players and we do not finance players. What we have got here is fantastic.

"But being in London One is bound to be a great pull for a lot of guys in the county.

"We are the flagship for Sussex rugby and hopefully the rest of the county can come along with us."

Heath will certainly have to travel a bit more next season. Their comparative local derbies look like being against Sutton and Staines.

They may have a relatively short journey to Havant, a ground where they put up a commendable effort before losing 24-18 in the Tetley's Bitter Cup last season.

Heath are also likely to face trips to Hampshire to take on Basingstoke who, of the strugglers in National Three, are the only side who qualify for London Division, and Winchester, who may be spared the drop with London One being a club short of capacity.

At least Heath know they are up. Things are a lot more uncertain for several other clubs.

Sidcup can do Heathfield and Pulborough a massive favour by winning their play-off today.

Defeat for the Kent side at Gosport and Fareham would mean relegation for Cranbrook to keep Three South East at ten clubs.

That in turn would lead to Heathfield going down from Four South East and Pulborough, despite losing just ten of their 18 games, getting the boot from London One.

As usual, promotion issues are virtually set in stone but relegation in various divisions depends on who comes down from above.

All will become official after the big London Division get together on June 2-3.
