Sergeant Melanie Doyle and her colleagues of Worthing and District police are to be congratulated for their proactive approach, complemented by positive solutions, in dealing with graffiti through the Genie Project.

Perhaps similar ideas could be pursued in Brighton and Hove.

It is much better to pre-empt problems than try to eradicate the graffiti afterwards.

Tagging is someone's signature and can be identified in time, given the evidence. Our streets are not less safe because of tagging but the fear we feel makes them seem so.

We feel abused by such graffiti. It is possible only a few individuals are responsible. Brighton and Hove police reported only 14 people caused the recent rash of defacement.

The police have stepped up their use of surveillance to catch the offenders. We can all help by reporting graffiti to the police on 0845 60 70 999 or, if you live in Worthing town centre, using the referral forms through the Town Initiative scheme.

If you think you know a suspect, call Crimestoppers, confidentially, on 0800 555 111.
