Many readers will be unaware the Radio Authority announced a few months ago it intended to grant Worthing a commercial radio licence.

From August this year, all interested parties are to submit their licence applications.

The closing date will be November. The Radio Authority will then assess all applications and announce the successful applicant early in 2002.

Recently, I attended a meeting hosted by Worthing Radio (trading as the Wireless Broadcasting Company), which will be submitting an application.

Readers may remember the very successful trial broadcast in November 1999.

I was extremely impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm demonstrated by a team who boasted more than 80 years of broadcasting experience between them.

One of the concerns they raised, which I wholeheartedly share, is the possibility of a large organisation which owns and runs a number of radio stations securing the licence.

This would result in the operation of the station being managed remotely, with very little local knowledge and input.

Worthing Radio strongly believes the radio station for Worthing should have its home in Worthing, employing, training and benefiting the people of Worthing.

In order to secure the licence, Worthing Radio will need as much support as possible from local people.

If you feel you would like to be part of Worthing Radio, or wish further information, please contact The Wireless Broadcasting Company, 32 Bridge Road, Worthing, West.Sussex BN14 7BX, e-mail stuart.james@wireless broadcastingcompany.co.uk or telephone 07074 737374.
