Bright young engineers earned a trophy for helping to save the environment by building their own battery-powered car.

The 20 pupils at Buckingham Middle School, Buckingham Road, Shoreham, won the award after putting their machine through its paces at Goodwood motor racing circuit near Chichester.

They beat ten other school teams when their car managed 57 laps of the small section of the circuit at the racetrack.

The challenge was linked to Science Week.

Youngsters had to design their own environmentally-friendly vehicle for the Adur Green Goblin Power Challenge, backed by West Sussex County Council and sponsoring companies.

Buckingham's pupils won the overall winners trophy and were judged the team making the best effort.

Their success also landed them an appearance on BBC TV's Newsround on Tuesday.
