He was able togive expert first-aid until the ambulance arrived.

Sussex riders filled the first three positions in the Croydon and District CA's 18-mile hilly time trial.

Sean Yates (Team Clean) won in 45min.12sec. Steve Dennis, of East Grinstead CC, was second in 45min.29sec and James Dear (Eastbourne Rovers) finished third in 47min. 43sec.

Worthing rider Chris McNamara has joined the Cycleweb-Synergy team. He made a good start by finishing 14th in the 93-mile Romford-Harlow road race, the opening event in the Premier Calendar series. The race was won by Mark Lovatt (Ribble CC).

On Sunday, McNamara will ride in the 117-mile Archer International Grand Prix at Amersham. The 100 riders include teams representing Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Holland and New Zealand, plus Britain's top sponsored teams.

There are no open events in Sussex this weekend but Eastbourne Rovers, Crawley Wheelers and Lewes Wanderers are holding club events for their own members.
