Three-dimensional computer models are tricky to construct, but are part of almost every computer game.
Now photographs can be turned directly into 3D models without massive expense or high-powered hardware. New software called D Sculptor allows complex shapes to be modelled quickly and easily.
The user has to take between 10 and 25 digital photographs (these can be scanned images) of the subject, each from a different angle. These photographs become the foundation for the computer-generated image.
Each photograph is selected individually and the subject is then digitally "outlined" so the software can identify what part of the photograph to reconstruct as a model.
The computer then calculates the model, taking into account the varying distances and angles within the set of photographs.
The finished model is displayed as a series of polygons linked to form the end image, which can be exported in a number of formats.
