Bomb disposal experts last night carried out a controlled explosion on a Second World War shell found on a beach.
The 2ft-long device was discovered by walkers opposite the cafe at Ovingdean Gap, Brighton.
It was detonated at 10pm and a spokesman for the bomb squad said it had contained live explosives.
Police warned anyone finding suspicious objects on the beach not to touch them but to contact the emergency services immediately.
