Brighton Health Care NHS Trust chief executive Stuart Welling has given his staff backing at a time of crisis.

Morale was sinking at the trust, one of the city's biggest employers, through lack of cash, shortage of staff and a series of three recent medical blunders.

Mr Welling has not made light of the medical mistakes which are all being seriously investigated. Action will be taken where necessary.

But he has told staff who feel under siege that the trust is standing by them during this difficult period.

Because the trust is being open about mistakes that have been made, it is inevitably attracting criticism.

But it's much better to be frank and honest instead of working, as so often in the past, under an NHS cloak of secrecy.

There have been mistakes. But they are a tiny number compared with the vast number of patients whose stay in hospital is highly successful.
