Nigel Eckersley missed a hat-trick of veteran titles for the season when he suffered his first defeat against Clive Carthy (Essex) at the English Championships in Sheffield.

Eckersley, the English No.2 from Horsham was beaten 21-18, 21-19.

The 47-year-old will be at the sharp end again on Sunday when Horsham entertain London Progress in the British League premier. Progress will be crowned champions if they defeat the Sussex club.

They have six full-time professional coaches, one more than England at the national training headquarters at Nottingham.

Horsham captain Ritchie Venner, still fighting to find his best form, said: "We will have an advantage on our own tables.

To win a point would be a major victory for us but I expect we shall be drinking their champagne at the end of the match when they have won the championship."

Entries for the All-Sussex Senior Championships close this weekend. The four-table event will be at Horsham on Sunday, April 1, running from 9am to around 7pm.
