What are the chances that in a couple of years' time we will suffer another outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease - or maybe rabies?
Will the rest of our livestock and wildlife be slaughtered?
However did our ancestors deal with these tragedies over the centuries and why has this disease landed on our island when there is the European landmass just 20 miles away?
Could it be that, like myxomatosis, this arrived with the assistance of one of our unfriendly cohabitants? After all, germ warfare was used in the Gulf war.
