Many students pursue the perfect pint during their time at university but few make a living from the search.

Brighton University graduate Liam Sheerin used a final year computing project as a spring board into the world of best beer practise.

Last year, he joined East Grinstead-based Cara Technologies, a company pecialising in solving problems for the brewing industry and brought his high-tech skills to the traditional trade.

Mr Sheerin has created a trouble-shooting software package for brewers, the Booze Boffin, based on advice supplied by beer experts with decades of knowledge working alongside him at the firm.

He said: "The Booze Boffin is an expert on a CD-ROM. Users follow a path of questions about the problem they have encoun-tered until one of the suggest-ions resolves the matter."

The system aims to replicate human thought-processing and delivers its deliberations through a question-and-answer interface on a standard browser.

It is easy to update content and add more sections of information. The Booze Boffin is only set up for beer but adding similar information about cider would not be a problem.

The software has a training section with information on how to pour and present different types of beer. This could help reduce staff turnover.
