Worthing United are right back in the promotion frame in Rich City County League division two following a crushing 6-1 defeat of Wealden.

Following a mini slump, United seem to have rediscovered their early season form and their cause was helped on Saturday with Peacehaven losing 1-0 away to East Grinstead.

Geoff Raynsford's side are two points behind Peacehaven, who are in the third promotion spot, and they have a game in hand over their rivals.

Raynsford said: "Every team goes through a bad spell but we are now looking like the side we were at the start of the season. Promotion? We stand a good chance. It is about the teams who now put the most consistent runs together."

Wealden were in good form after scoring six against Crowborough in midweek and they got a great start with Darren Brown putting them ahead after just two minutes. Six minutes later Worthing were 3-1 ahead and they never looked back.

Steve Pickles headed home the equaliser from a great cross by Mike McCaffrey, Gavin Jones bagged a hat-trick, while Nigel Waller and Paul O'Sullivan also got on the scoresheet.

East Grinstead surprised Peacehaven in a physical encounter at East Court.

The only goal came on the stroke of half time and Peacehaven's fortunes were not helped by the dismissal of Simon Jones.

Peacehaven manager Peter Edwards said: "We were second best throughout and we were lucky to get away with 1-0.

"The pitch was extremely heavy. They were a strong side in the mud and they played to their strengths."

Despite the defeat, Edwards feels there is still much to play for in the division. He said: "There has always been seven or eight teams in it and there still are.

"There is still a long way to go but we must adapt to these sort of games quicker and better."

At the other end of the table Storrington climbed six points clear of the relegation zone after a 2-0 win over improving Shinewater. Goals came from Gavin Pritchard and Ben Whitby.

Storrington moved above Crawley Down, who lost 4-2 away to Westfield. Player-manager Shaun Hardy scored twice for Westfield, with Darren Paine and Mark Drinkwater (penalty) also netting. Replies came in the form of an own goal and Darren Tidey's strike.

Rock bottom Lingfield crashed to a 4-0 defeat away to Bosham, for whom Simon Watling grabbed a second half hat-trick. Kevin McCutcheon also netted.
