A dockyard manager appeared in court today charged with manslaughter over the death of a man who was killed on his first day at work.

Simon Jones, 24, of Banbury, Oxfordshire, was killed in an accident at Shoreham Docks on April 24 1998, Bow Street magistrates heard.

Richard James Martell, of Aldingbourne Drive, Chichester, the manager of Dutch-owned shipping company Euromin, is accused of manslaughter.

His employer, of Battersea Bridge Road, central London, faces a separate charge of corporate manslaughter.

District Judge Timothy Workman ordered that both cases be transferred to the Old Bailey for a plea and directions hearing on March 27. Mr Martell was granted unconditional bail.

Mr Jones's parents Chris and Ann were at the hearing with their son Tim, 25.
