Storrington rider Mark Jones led the host club to a clean sweep of team prizes in the Stella's two open time trials.

The first event was over a hilly 11-mile course from Storrington to Whiteways Lodge and back.

It resulted in a win for Hampshire rider Malcolm Cox (VC St Raphael), who recorded 27min.8sec. Jones was second in 27min.50sec, with Mark Parsons (Phoenix Tri Club), from Godalming, third in 28min. 34sec.

Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley) was fourth in 28min.55sec, followed by Neil Baker (Deal) in 29min.10sec. Brighton rider Jonathan Sharpe (Cycleweb), the Sussex cyclo-cross champion, was sixth in 29min.13sec. GS Stella (Jones, Phil Wise and Andy Payne) won the team event.

The weather was almost perfect, but next day the riders got a soaking in the 27-mile circuit time trial.

Cox again came out on top with a time of 1hr.3min.52sec. Saltdean's John Limpus (Stella), who did not enter the previous day's event, was second in 1hr.4min.8sec. Jones was third with 1hr.4min 32sec and Richard Keevil recorded 1hr.11min 46sec to clinch another team win for GS Stella. Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) won the women's event in 1hr 19min.28sec.

The prize for the fastest rider over the two events was won by Cox, with Jones second and Parsons third. Sharpe finished sixth overall, Tristan Court (Brighton Mitre) was seventh, and Steve Trott (Worthing Excelsior) was tenth.

GS Stella won the overall team prize ahead of the Mitre trio of Tristan Court, Jay Chisnall and Robin Johnson.

Cox said: "This made up for crashing and only finishing third last year. It was a really good event and I'll be back next year to defend the trophy."

The Central Sussex club's open 25-mile time trial on Sunday starts from Ashurst at 9am. Jones and Limpus lead the local riders, while Bournemouth star Bryan Taylor is the leading visitor.
