The man accused of kidnapping and murdering eight-year-old Sarah Payne was today remanded in custody when he made a brief appearance in court.

Roy William Whiting, 42, spoke only to confirm his name and age during the 38-minute hearing at Chichester.

Whiting wore a red sweatshirt and was flanked by three security guards when he stepped into the dock.

Presiding magistrate Michael Sugden, sitting with two others, refused an application for bail made on behalf of Whiting, formerly of St Augustine Road, Littlehampton.

Mr Sugden indicated that Whiting would appear for a preliminary hearing at Lewes Crown Court on February 19.

An angry crowd of more than 200 people chased the vehicle carrying Whiting away from the court.

Members of the public shouted abuse as the van, escorted by police, sped away.

The vehicle stopped 100 yards down the road at a level crossing. The crowd gave chase but it sped away before they reached it.

One person was arrested and an egg was hurled at the vehicle.

Sarah, from Hersham, Surrey, disappeared near her grandparents' home in Kingston Gorse, East Preston, on July 1 last year.

Her partially-buried body was found 16 days later just off the A29 near Pulborough.
