A Sussex woman has toured the county to find top places to spend days out.

Georgina Hovey, 44, undertook the one-woman mission to prepare the East Sussex section of a free nation-wide online guide.

Georgina, from Plump-ton Green, investigated more than 600 special events, visitor attract-ions, charity activities and day trips.

Her findings have been published on the www.localtoday.co.uk web site, which includes details of 20,000 events around the UK.

Georgina said: "I have lived in Sussex for more than 14 years and had no idea about many of the great things that are happening on my doorstep.

"I am trying to get information on all the fun things to do into one place people can explore for ideas.

"The site covers every-thing we hear about, from events at the Brighton Pier to learning to survive in the wild at Wilderness Wood, taking in WI markets and Weight Watchers on the way."

Visitors to the site can search the database by location, date or category as well as sign up for an email listing of all the local events for the week ahead.

For two months before the site was published, Georgina asked tourist information centres for their input, checked the internet for relevant Sussex sites and simply went out to see what she could find.

She said: "When I arrived at Bodiam Castle, I discovered a theatre company dressed in authentic medieval dress jousting on the bridge outside. It fired my imagination and I wanted to fill the site with events people might not know about and would really enjoy."

Now the site has been launched, Georgina has found updating the contents time-consuming.

She has asked organisers already listed on the site and anyone thinking of sending in new contributions to use an automated updating system to add events.

She said: "More than 200 event organisers are already submitting information and have reported back that they found it easy and fun to do it. They have got the message that promoting their events online brings in new audiences and are delighted that it's free. Heathfield Choral Society have not only agreed to submit all their events but have also said they will give us a link from their site."

Ian Blight, public relations and marketing, at Drusillas Park, near Alfriston, said: "We were impressed that the list of events we provided in the first place was put online instantly. We now have our own password for all our content, so we can say exactly what we want to.

"We have been looking into online promotion in general and this is fabulous practical use of the internet."

Georgina added: "I am now going to seek out the smaller and lesser-known events to make the site really comprehensive. I can see the potential to provide this service to schools and charities."
