Lewes caused the shock of the season in National League division one by scoring twice in the last four minutes to snatch a 3-2 win away to leaders Hampstead.

The home side boasted a 100 per cent record from the first half of the season and that looked set to continue as they raced into a 2-0 lead inside six minutes on Sunday.

But Lewes defied the odds to grab a winner with the last touch of the game and, in doing so, maintained their bid for a place in the play-offs.

Lewes manager Peter Boyse said: "We possibly didn't expect to get anything out of this game. To get the full three points when it looked like we would get one is marvellous.

"It is certainly a very big result for us as it keeps us in contention for a play-off place. We are still six points behind Chelmsford, who are second.

"We play Chelmsford this week and Hampstead play them the week after. If we beat them and Hampstead beat them, then it becomes very interesting."

Lewes were missing skipper Jeremy Boyse with a one-match suspension and they had further problems in the match itself, going down to nine men at one stage in the second half with Alistair Boyse and Carl Wright sin-binned.

Hampstead took advantage of defensive errors to score in the first six minutes through Craig Carolan and Justin King.

But the Lewes defence excelled after that, most notably South African international goalkeeper Chris Hibbert who made a string of terrific saves.

Will Champness pulled a goal back with a short corner strike ten minutes before half time but there was still no hint of the drama to come as Lewes trailed 2-1 until the 66th minute.

Then, with four minutes left, Lewes were awarded a free hit just outside the circle. Alistair Boyse struck it and the ball deflected off Phil Walker's stick, looping over the Hampstead goalkeeper into the net.

In the final minute Lewes were awarded a short corner which led to a second short corner. Time was up but under the rules of hockey it had to be taken and Champness scored again with a deflected strike.

Two goals in the last eight minutes earned East Grinstead a 2-1 win over Brooklands, their first of the season. The match was a lack-lustre affair until the final eight minutes when Grinstead scored twice.

Under the watchful eye of new Australian coach, Glenn Freeman, Grinstead fell behind seven minutes into the second half when Oliver Cooper scored following a goalmouth scramble.

The hosts responded well and they drew level on 62 minutes when Richard Leman burst into the circle. His shot was saved but skipper Richard Payneslid the ball home.

But in the final minute Dominic Male was on hand to score the winner for Grinstead after good work from Ian Pattison.
