Worthing maintained top spot in Kent and Sussex division one after taking four points from their two matches over the weekend.

Sunday's showdown with promotion rivals Maidstone resulted in a 1-1 draw, with Cedric Atkinson netting for Worthing.

Maidstone grabbed their equaliser with a minute to go but Worthing skipper Simon Holloway admitted: "It was probably a fair result because they put us under a lot of pressure in the first half."

Holloway and Colin Dand were the scorers on Saturday as Worthing triumphed 2-0 against local rivals Penguins.

Goalkeeper Chris Wheedon made some fine saves for Penguins, who gave a good account of themselves. They could have grabbed a consolation in the closing stages as Dave Matthews twice had efforts saved and a shot by Marcus Brunton was cleared off the line.

Worthing will also be bidding for a place in the quarter finals of the HA Vase when they visit Cirencester on Sunday. The club has been clocking up the miles in this season's competition, including a visit to Sunderland in the last round.

Worthing skipper Simon Holloway said: "We have worked out the amount of travelling we have done so far and it is the equivalent of travelling to Moscow.

"It is another big day for the club and we are all looking forward to it."

Meanwhile, Eastbourne suffered a fourth successive defeat as they lost 4-1 at home to Sevenoaks, with Nick Corbett getting the consolation. Newhaven's match with New Beccehamian was postponed.
