It doesn't always take a big catch to win the big money. For Nigel Aldridge, of Pulborough Carringdale Blue, an 11 1/2oz perch taken on worm was worth £220.

Nigel was top individual in the second round of the Billingshurst League fished on the Wey Navigation Canal from the White Hart to the Anchor in the Byfleet area.

Fifty-five of the 80 taking part blanked after five hours. "The water temperature was 37 1/2 degrees and you don't catch much when the water is that cold," said league organiser Mick Fuller.

Second man Martin Chalcraft, of Billingshurst Carringdale Red, won £160 for landing a 10oz chub on double pinkie against a boat using a 16 metre pole.

Bren McGrath, of Greyshott Tackle, picked up £120 for getting five silver fish (3 1/2oz) from a peg by the M25 motorway bridge.

When the Pevensey Bay club had a three hour evening match at the same venue as the league fixture three nights previously catches had been dominated by whiting.

But the winner, Paul King, on 8lb 5oz did have a flounder of 1lb 3oz. in his catch. Ian Hopper had 10 whiting, four dabs and a rockling for 6lb 3oz, Phil Metcalfe's 5lb 2 1/2oz included a record breaking whiting of 1lb 14 1/2oz while Dick Penny 4lb 7floz.
