Potentially lethal commercial display fireworks have been stolen by burglars.

Police have appealed for help in recovering the explosives, which they fear could be sold to, or found by, an unwitting member of the public with disastrous consequences.

The most dangerous device would explode over an area of 60ft and would seriously injure or kill anyone standing too close.

The fireworks were stolen yesterday from an undisclosed address in Rye, a police spokesman said.

Some of the explosive items look like a pear, or ball, wrapped in brown paper. They are 3in wide and have a piece of string sticking out.

The spokesman said: "If ignited these will explode over a 60ft area and are likely to cause fatal injuries.

"Anyone knowing where they are should contact the police or the fire brigade immediately."

A quantity of metre-long multi-coloured rockets were also taken. These had the words Kim Bolton and Made in Spain on them.

Anyone with information should call Hastings Police on 0845 6070999.
