A man was fighting for life today after being punched in a Brighton night club.

The 29-year-old victim collapsed inside the Escape Club in Marine Parade and seemingly recovered but collapsed again later at his home in Hove.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he was found to have had a brain haemorrhage.

The victim, who his single but has children from a previous relationship, was on life support today. His condition was described as critical.

A team of detectives is investigating the incident and police want to speak to anyone who was in the club when the attack happened, early on Sunday.

The inquiry is being led by Detective Chief Inspector John Levett and Detective Inspector Bill Warner.

Mr Warner said: "We are anxious to trace everyone who was in the club early Sunday to eliminate them from our inquiries."

Details of the attack in the club are sketchy and so far there are few witnesses.

A friend who was with the victim saw him collapse. He asked club staff to help him get to his feet. At first they thought he was simply the worse for drink.

But police said there were indications he had been punched in the head and hit his head badly when he landed.

He left the club but collapsed again when he arrived home.

Simon Woplin, manager of the Escape, said: "This is very sad and our thoughts are with him and his family.

"Due to the nature of the investigation and whether or not it was an assault, I cannot comment further."

There have been no arrests.
