Two 6lb-plus bream and a carp, all taken on feeder and maggot, made John Wilson on 18lb the impressive winner of the Billingshurst match at Okehurst.

Second in a field of 23 was Tom Gorman who, like the others in the frame, had a single bream. Tom's was 4lb 12oz, Matthew Prime 3lb 15.25oz and Bruce Townsend 3lb 14oz.

A cod of 14lb 10oz by Keith Ellis (66 per cent) was the only fish of specimen size caught in the Southwick Deep Sean Anglers January competition. Ellis was a little more than nine miles out and baited with squid. Members are due out again tomorrow but, if conditions are too rough, the next date is February 4.

Paul Doyle had 17lb 14oz of mainly dabs and pout to win Meridian's first match of the year at Dungeness. Dave Gravett had five species in his 11lb 10oz bag. Gary Hazelgrove took the round pool with a 1lb 14oz dogfish and Baz Barratt the flat with a dab of 10 1/4oz.

After a captains' meeting, the East Sussex League decided not to fish the sixth and final round match. Polegate, captained by Mark Feery, had already clinched top spot and qualify for the national league semi-finals next month, where they will fish the Grand Union Canal in the Milton Keynes area.

Teams gathered at Rotherfield Pond for the seventh and final round of Division A of the Three Counties League and found it covered by ice.
