Albion manager Micky Adams has warned Paul Brooker he faces fierce competition for his best position.

The former Fulham winger has been used in a variety of roles since breaking back into the starting line-up just before Christmas.

He played behind two strikers against Exeter, on the right at Barnet and against Southend, just off Bobby Zamora at Brentford and then on the left at Kidderminster last Saturday.

"I think he can play up front, right wing or left wing," said Adams. "Possibly his best position is right wing, but we've got Freeman and Hart to play there as well."

The unpredictable Brooker has failed to command a regular place in the starting line-up since making his loan move from Fulham permanent in a £25,000 summer deal.

"He has shown glimpses of what he is capable of and in other games he has been disappointing," Adams said.

"We've got a decent squad and with so many people playing for the front three places it is no good any of them coming to knock on my door and asking why they are not in the team.

"Eventually they will get a go and then it's down to them. The only answer they can ever give me is by performing.

"All I want Paul to do is be confident. You always have a problem with front men in that they are either manic depressives if things are not going right or they are flying.

"Only when you get more experience do you realise there are going to be highs and lows and you can't be at your best in every game. It's about how you deal with the lows."
