Labour MP David Lepper wants Christmas Day to be a guaranteed day of rest for all shop workers.
The MP for Brighton Pavilion signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons tabled by former Consumer Minister Nigel Griffiths calling for the 2.6 million shopworkers in the UK to have the right to take Christmas Day off.
Mr Lepper, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said; "Even Scrooge gave Bob Crachit Christmas Day off, although he did make him work late on Christmas Eve.
"I was shocked to learn the extent of Christmas Day opening last year and I am very worried more retailers will be considering opening this year.
"Christmas Day is very special and should remain so. It is a time for families and it is important parents should be with their children to enjoy the festivities.
"This is a very busy period for shopworkers with the pre-Christmas present buying and the after-Christmas sales. I think they deserve at least one day off."
More than 30 MPs have so far signed the motion which bacaks the campaign against Christmas Day working launched by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.
USDAW claims some employers put undue pressure on shop workers to work over the festive holiday and wants a change in the law to protect workers when Christmas day does not fall on a Sunday.
