There are a number of reasons why the flood victims of Lewes should not label themselves travellers, despite Mr Bonwick's obvious delusions about the subject (November 30).

If the people forced to live in caravans were actual travellers, they would have to pay road tax on a vehicle in order to move themselves and their belongings every few weeks. Their children would have to move schools every term or so.

They would pay taxes at work yet would not have refuse collection, running water, an electricity supply, sewage facilities, street lighting, policing or security.

They would be banned from pubs and social centres and would be followed around shops and supermarkets on a regular basis.

I am sure that Mr Bonwick believes that travellers have it easy, as do many of the general public. The points raised here make it clear that they do not.

As for the complaints that travellers never move, the people on pitches at Horsdean are allowed to stay for a maximum of 3-6 months. This would be obvious to the more astute observer.
