A driver was saved from a 750ft plunge from a cliff top when his car became stuck in dense undergrowth.

It happened at 2.30pm on Saturday. A Lada, driven by an elderly man, turned off the Beachy Head Road, near Eastbourne, and sped down the steep slope.

The car was halted when it crashed into dense bushes at Bullockdown Farm.

A member of the public alerted the emergency services, who found the car buried about 70 yards into the bushes.

Firefighters and a Coastguard rescue team freed the driver.

Coastguard spokesman Bill Vanstone said: "It wasn't hard to find him because the car had ploughed a big path through the bushes.

"The car was heading towards the cliff edge but fortunately the undergrowth stopped him.

"We were able to get him out and it appeared he had only suffered a few minor scratches."

The man, in his 60s, was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital as a precaution.

The victim has not been named by Sussex Police, who operate a data protection policy.
