If MPs such as Peter Bottomley want to do cyclists a good turn (MP urges helmets for post cyclists, Argus, December 2), I suggest they call for measures to prevent motorists parking in cycle lanes.
At Coombe Terrace on the Lewes Road in Brighton, the cyclists' path is continually blocked by parked cars.
Cyclists then have no option but to pull out into heavy, fast-moving traffic. What is the point of Brighton and Hove Council spending money on cycle lanes if motorists are allowed to obstruct them and endanger cyclists' lives?
Merely calling for helmet use does not address the causes of accidents and the MP's use of statistics is disputed by the Cyclists Touring Club.
