Lewes manager Peter Boyse has vowed his side will bounce back from a dreadful start to the season.

Following Sunday's 4-3 defeat away to rock bottom Stourport, Lewes have lost three of their opening four games in National League division one.

Boyse cannot pinpoint the reason why his side have been unable to repeat the great run last year when Lewes lost just two games all season and only missed out on promotion on the final day of the campaign.

Boyse said: "A lot of the sides in this league are very close. Although we had some resounding wins last year, we also had some lucky wins. This year it is the other way round.

"It is not helped by the fact that we have lost our own pitch and training facilities. We are not doing any training at the moment.

"It is one of those things but I think we will come out of it and string some wins together.

"We have plenty of spirit and plenty of skill, so I am sure we will turn things round."

The Southdown Club pitch, home to Lewes, were ruined during recent flooding. Some games have been switched to away venues, while this weekend's double helping of action, against East Grinstead in the league and Indian Gymkhana in the cup, will take place at Sussex University.

At Stourport, Lewes dominated the opening exchanges but wasted a string of chances and trailed 2-1 at half time with only Carl Wright's first National League goal to show for their efforts.

The hosts extended their lead in the second half, but Lewes fought back to draw level thanks to a penalty stroke from Ben Hawes and a short corner strike from Will Champness.

Forward Lewes then hit the post but, with men pushing forward, Stourport broke away to snatch a winner.

Boyse added: It was not a good disciplined performance and was not helped by the conditions. We should have sewn it up early on and still should have come back at the end."

Lewes: Hibbert; Standing, Champness, Heslop, Walker; Poulsen, Hill, Hawes; A. Boyse, J. Boyse, Hurle. Subs used: Cabay, Wright. Man-of-the-Match: Andy Heslop.

East Grinstead were left bottom of division one following their 5-0 defeat at home to Beeston.

Grinstead never recovered from a hat-trick of goals scored by their Nottingham visitors during a lively eight minutes in the middle of the first half.

The Sussex side combined well at the outset but, as Beeston began to settle, Grinstead's passing became ragged and their movement off the ball disappointing.

This pattern continued after the interval and, with two further goals, Beeston were able to cruise to a comfortable victory to rival their recent 7-1 success over Stourport.

After visiting Lewes on Saturday, Grinstead are away to Old Georgians in the third round of the HA Cup on Sunday.
