Travel in Sussex continues to be severely disrupted due to the weather conditions and continuing speed restrictions on the rail network.

Police advise people not to make unnecessary car journeys and to stay at home where possible.

The wind has brought down power lines, trees and traffic lights and there is a lot of surface spray.

Motorists travelling north from Brighton should enjoy a smoother journey after the M23 northbound was reopened between junctions 9 and 7 while the eastbound carriageway on the M25 also reopened.

But motorists are warned that the M25 westbound is still closed.

Flights at Gatwick are also subject to delays and some have been cancelled. People due to travel or to meet an arrival are advised to contact their airline for specific details.

The Gatwick Express is operating a half-hourly service where possible although services are taking longer than scheduled.

Trains run from Victoria on the hour and half-hour, and from Gatwick at 20 and 50 minutes past the hour.

The rest of the rail network is at a virtual standstill with most Connex and Thameslink services suspended.

Connex is running a very limited shuttle service in both directions on the following routes but they are not running to timetable: Victoria to Brighton; Victoria to Sutton; Brighton to Seaford; Brighton to Chichester; and Tattenham Corner to Purley.

Thameslink services between Brighton and London are currently suspended.

For further rail information call national rail enquiries on 0345 484950 or go to www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest travel updates.

And on the ferries, Hoverspeed's Seacat service from Newhaven has been cancelled.
