I was unaware, until I read your report (Families just say no to rehab centre, Argus, September 21) of the plans to turn a former retirement home into a rehabilitation centre for recovering alcoholics in my neighbourhood.

How disappointing that local people can have taken the time and trouble to organise petitions to oppose the plans but have failed to find the time or take trouble to fully inform themselves about the project and the support and supervision that recovering alcoholics receive.

What threat exactly do recovering alcoholics pose and in what way does their behaviour compare with the behaviour of people leaving the pub a few doors away from my house every evening?
