Haywards Heath stormed to a 57-23 division two win against Tonbridge Juddians, their first of the season.

Tonbridge were due to visit Whitemans Green, but opted not to travel because of the fuel crisis. However Heath agreed to make the trip to Kent and were glad they did as they bounced back from their 22-19 opening day reverse against Old Midwhitgiftians.

Tries came from Giles Goodburn, Jon Graham, Dave Wattam, James Roberts, Tom Hills and Owen Ashton, who also kicked five penalties and four conversions to take his personal tally to 32.

Coach Steve Heaton said: "I'm delighted with our attacking, but it is unusual for us to lose concentration which we did at times against Tonbridge. It is we'll be working on it in training."

East Grinstead got off to a winning start at the expense of Lewes.

Their 8-7 win was a dour encounter at the Stanley Turner Ground, but they took charge early on when outside-half Ray Hennessy went over in the corner.

Lock Neil Baker went over for Lewes after the forwards worked the ball out to him from a short penalty on East Grinstead's 22 and full-back Martin Lovell converted to put Lewes 7-5 ahead.

The lead was shortlived when scrum-half Dave Moore slotted over a penalty for East Grinstead to give them an 8-7 half time lead.

That was how the scores remained after a disappointing second half which saw Lewes miss three penalties.

Crawley skipper Steve Pilgrim has blasted Sidcup for turning down several offers to get their Three South East match on despite the fuel shortage.

He said: "We were down to play them at home, but contacted them offering to travel to their place. We even offered to pick their players up or pay train and bus fares to get them to the match. Sidcup told us they had already told their players the game was off and I guess they had a few key players missing and didn't fancy playing us."
