In the article on the possible destruction of skylark nests on Beacon Hill (Argus, July 13), Rottingdean Parish Council was dismayed to see the Brighton and Hove Council spokeswoman attribute a request to cut the grass at that time to us.
Rottingdean Parish Council has sought to develop a good working relationship with its countryside ranger for the management of its land.
We initially encouraged him to institute a survey of the flora and fauna on Beacon Hill and then to produce a comprehensive management plan meeting the needs of both the wild flowers and the skylarks.
This plan, based on expert advice, recommended the crest of Beacon Hill be managed to support the skylarks, while the surrounding area be cut to encourage wild flowers. The plan was implemented for the first time this year.
At no time have we ever intimated what grass should be cut nor when. It is the countryside ranger who has the expertise, not us, and the spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove Council should not have apportioned blame for cutting the grass at the wrong time to us.
