Prime Minister Tony Blair will today unveil a memorial to Sussex PC Jeff Tooley.

The ceremony will take place at the spot where PC Tooley was knocked down and killed by driver John Heaton, 47, at Brighton Road, Shoreham.

Heaton was jailed for seven years by Chichester Crown Court after he admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

Heaton, 47, of New-market Road, Brighton, drove off and set fire to the van at Devil's Dyke to try to destroy the evidence that he was behind the wheel. Three days later he gave himself up to police and claimed he had nodded off because he was tired and had been drinking.

The sentencing comments of Judge Anthony Thorpe sparked the Argus Justice for Jeff campaign for increased sentencing powers in similar cases.

Judge Thorpe said the maximum sentence for the offence was ten years, compared with 14 years for burglary.

The unveiling takes place this afternoon and will also be attended by film director Michael Winner, founder of the Police Memorial Trust, and Sussex Chief Constable Paul Whitehouse.

The memorial to PC Tooley is the 23rd the trust has put up. The A259 between Kingston Lane and Eastern Avenue will be closed for the ceremony.
