Albion manager Micky Adams is thinking big in his quest to sign a new striker.

The Seagulls are being linked with Shrewsbury's pint-sized goalgetter Lee Steele.

Adams is not ruling Steele out, but he is looking for "a different type of player".

A tall target man remains top of Albion's wanted list.

Adams, currently abroad on holiday, revealed: "Lee Steele always scores goals in the lower divisions.

"We are actively searching for a different type of player to Lee. He is five foot seven and we need a six foot two lad. That is not to say we aren't interested in him.

"Our main priority is still a big target man. We've had a substantial bid for one turned down and at the moment that deal is not likely to happen, but I am actively pursuing another avenue while I'm away."

Adams had talks with 6ft 4ins Julian Alsop before he left Swansea for Cheltenham.

Albion are no longer interested in diminutive former Bournemouth marksman Mark Stein and he is now expected to move to Swansea.

But the out-of-contract Steele could enter calculations, with Adams still expressing a wish to bring in two new forwards.

Shrewsbury's top scorer for the last three seasons is available on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling. He has already spoken to Doncaster and Plymouth, who have just signed ex-Albion midfielder Jason Peake.

Adams is likely to have talks with the 26-year-old next week.

The Albion players return for pre-season training tomorrow, but Adams is not back until Saturday.

He has dismissed a report linking the Seagulls with out-of-favour Portsmouth goalkeeper Andy Petterson following Mark Walton's unexpected departure to Cardiff.
