Several records were broken at the Brighton, Hove and Portslade Schools Year Seven championships.

The top performances at Withdean came from Dorothy Stringer's Danny Stearman and Cardinal Newman pair Sean Wares and Mathew Hess.

In the 1,000 metres, Sean clocked 3min 12.8sec, a performance bettered by one under-13s athlete in Sussex last year.

Schoolmate Mathew recorded 20.6sec for the 200m, which would have also been the second best effort in Sussex last year.

In the javelin, Danny pulled out a fine throw of 29.40m, which would have given him third spot in Sussex last summer.

The championships were cancelled last year due to work on the Withdean track, caused by the arrival of Albion.

The championships had been organised by Paul Taylor and Varndean School staff. Although they were sqeezed into fourth in the final team result with 99 points, fellow campus school Dorothy Stringer won the trophy with 129 points, just two points more than Cardinal Newman, with Blatchington Mill third team with 103 points.
