East Sussex County Council provides a very strong argument that Brighton and Hove Council should deal with its own waste, including incineration, should it be necessary and safe (Argus, July 1).
The fact that officers of the county council are repeating earlier recommendations is an admission of their failure to win an argument despite being empowered by Brighton and Hove Council.
It is a basic necessity for any large conurbation, such as Brighton and Hove, to be able to deal with its own waste within its own boundaries.
If it can't, then it should reorganise its priorities. In domestic terms, if my dustbin gets full I use my garage or my garden for the overspill.
I don't drive 15 miles to put it in my neighbour's dustbin, even if I could get away with it. Why can't Brighton and Hove re-use one of its own facilities?
