I presume Squadron Leader Stabler assumed the gentleman pictured was too old to qualify for the National Service Medal (Opinion, June 26).
In fact, although an unofficial medal, all who were called up for many forms of National Service from 1939 to 1960 (as shown on the obverse of the medal), whether military or civilian, are entitled to wear it.
This means that it could be seen worn by people aged from 60 to 80 plus.
