At a public inquiry in 1992, the Highways Agency insisted the A27/A280 Patching spaghetti junction and superhighway complex were needed in the interests of road safety.
Strange, then, in the four years since it opened, numerous horrendous crashes have occurred, the latest involving a juggernaut and road roller. So, if it hasn't improved road safety, what has it done?
Well, it's generated lots of extra traffic through Worthing, causing gridlock for most of the day, with similar problems in Angmering. If thousands of extra houses are built on greenfield sites, even more traffic is likely, created by commuters chasing jobs bigger roads have exported away from the coast.
